Started earlier this year in San Francisco, Carrotmob is a community event that brings shoppers and stores together to help businesses go greener. The event operates as a reverse boycott, where shoppers spend money at specific businesses who have committed to spend a percentage of the day's proceeds on improving the store's energy efficiency in lighting, heating, cooling, refrigeration, etc.
The first New York City event will be right here in the Slope at Tarzian Hardware, a family-owned hardware store located at 193 7th Avenue (between 2nd and 3rd Street).
In addition to everything you'd expect to find at a hardware store, Tarzian carries cleaning supplies, housewares, and a large selection of holiday lights and decorations.
Twenty-two cents of every dollar spent at Tarzian on this day will be used to make improvements to the store. Get what you need, or pick up a few things for local NYC charities who will be on hand to accept donations. As a service to Carrotmobbers, Tarzian will also be educating shoppers on greener options for Christmas decorating and easy energy improvements that can be made in homes and apartments.
The Carrotmob model has already been successful in San Francisco, Kansas City, and Bristol, England, and the CarrotmobNYC team is excited to bring it to Brooklyn. Each event is unique to the community hosting it -- the Park Slope event will be focused on family holiday fun.
The beautiful thing about Carrotmob is how it brings communities together in a positive way to effect true, grass-roots level change. Yes, it's important to change our lightbulbs and recycle in our own homes, but individual changes like that can only get us so far. To really make the future clean and green and lovely, we have to work together, as Co-op members well know. Carrotmob is a fantastic and festive way to do just that.
Please come on December 14th to be part of the solution in our community! For more information, go to http://www.carrotmobnyc.com.
