July 13th -- Recycling & Reusing
With 8 million people in New York City we create a lot of waste, but so much of our "trash" could in fact be used by others, be recycled or repurposed, or even become our own newfound treasure. We will explore practical and innovative ways we can work to reduce our waste and find new uses for old things.
Joining us to discuss alternatives for our trash will be Eva Radke, Founder, President of Film Biz Recycling. Founded in May 2008, Film Biz Recycling (FBR) is a niche-market hybrid not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the entertainment industry address the triple bottom line: profit, people and planet.
Dan Tainow, the Director of Education at the Lower East Side Ecology Center. The Center works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.
Catherine Charlot, the owner and designer of HIMANE, an apparel and accessory designs company which upcycles uses discarded umbrellas, old shirts, jeans, boots, upholstery materials, salvaged materials from factories and designers to create handbags, clutches, laptop cases and dresses. Her work has been featured on CNN, CBS, NBC, and MSNBC
Stephanie Huffaker, the artist behind Garbage of Eden NYC, a sustainable art and design project taking a look at the way we value the objects around us, and how this affects the environment in which we all live.
Christina Salvi, Assistant Director of the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education (OROE) at GrowNYC. OROE works to increase participation in New York City’s curbside recycling program using a grassroots, community-by-community strategy.
In addition to a lively discussion of how you can recycle and repurpose just about anything, handmade upcycled products from Himane and Garbage of Eden NYC will be available for sale.
