Event Description

Join master photographer Joel Meyerowitz and NYC Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe for a book signing celebrating the publication of Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks (Aperture, October 2009). This compelling body of photographic work is the result of a unique commission from Commissioner Benepe to document, interpret and celebrate one of the city’s greatest legacies: the nearly 29,000 acres of parks in the five boroughs, including woodlands, streams, waterfronts, wilderness sites, and beaches, as well as the more familiar ‘neighborhood’ parks.

Meyerowitz is the first photographer to document New York City’s parks since the 1930s, when they were photographed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA program.

An accompanying exhibition of photographs from the publication is on view at the Museum of the City of New York, from October 9, 2009 – March 7, 2010.
