Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market will host Oktoberfest and Mural Dedication Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 11am to 3pm in the Marketplace. The celebration will begin at 11am with the unveiling and dedication of our new, colorful mural painted by local Bedford-Stuyvesant youth. The mural Project has been sponsored by Green Guerillas.
The mural dedication will be followed by spoken word performance, Caribbean folk music with African drums and banjos. Lots of surprise performers are scheduled. We will also host fall harvest cooking demonstrations, a composting basics workshop and activities for children throughout the day. Use this opportunity to tour the new Hattie Carthan Garden compost system and chicken coop and see our cool crops growing in the hoophouse and market beds.
The Market will carry the usual array of fresh fall fruits and vegetables, ciders, and cheeses. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market opened this season on July 11th and has been building a space where local food producers sell food grown in their gardens or farms, local community chefs host cooking demonstrations and healthy eating programming. Conversations about food and food issues are spurred and supported and culturally appropriate foods are considered vital to community nutrition. The Farmers’ Market is also a community's effort to reclaim its agricultural heritage and contribute to the cultural, social and economic vitality of Central Brooklyn.
