GrowNYC’s Million Pound Challenge Help NYC lose one million pounds!

The average New Yorker tosses 46 pounds of clothing and textiles in the trash each year, totaling 6% of our entire residential waste stream. But with your help, landfills are going on a diet.

GrowNYC’s Million Pound Challenge is calling on all New Yorkers to clean out closets and empty drawers of unwanted clothing, linens, shoes, bags and more.

Are your Nikes greener than your Adidas?

There will soon be an answer to this question, if the manufacturers have their way.

A group of roughly 100 well-known apparel brands and retailers have developed a software tool to help them measure the environmental impact of their apparel and footwear, from raw material to garbage dump. Ultimately, the companies hope to display an eco-value on a tag or package, much like the Energy Star rating of appliances.(Read More)

Hi everyone! Think you may be interested in this upcoming event.
http://www.greenedgenyc.org/events/sense-sustainability

It is an eco-fashion fundraiser featuring a runway show and sample sale!
We already know this, but their website included a great reminder of why we love it: clothes made out of organic cotton or bamboo are biodegradable, while clothes made from synthetic - outlive you; clothes made out of recycled materials give that plastic bottle a second, sustainable fashions support small independent producers and their skills, in a non-sweatshop environment.

Designers include: Tina Tandon, Helen Asir and Swati Argade
