August 21st is National Honeybee Awareness Day!

In addition to making honey, honey bees pollinate a third of our diet – hundreds of fruits and vegetables. These keystone species are also indicators of the health of our environment.

As you may know, bee populations have been in massive decline and bees have been mysteriously disappearing from their hives for the past five years – a syndrome better known as Colony Collapse Disorder.

The new documentary, Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page (Juno, Inception), takes a piercing investigative look at the economic, ecological, political and spiritual implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee. The film also offers solutions for everyone to help the bees, other pollinators and protect our environment.

As a part of the film’s Bee the Change campaign, Vanishing of the Bees will be playing across the U.S. in theaters, libraries, schools, parks, churches and homes.

We think this is an important film that can raise awareness about bees and our agricultural landscape and make a difference in the health of our world.

John Howe, founder of The Brooklyn Bee, lives in Fort Greene where he has three beehives on his roof. The bees make honey that John sells; he also makes soap, lip balm and candles from beeswax. Come learn how to keep bees. Plus, this is the week that the City Council holds hearings to legalize beekeeping in NYC (Wednesday, Feb 3). Just Food will speak briefly about the legislation and what we can do to make sure it passes.

Hi Everyone, I used to help my Mom with our bees and she taught me quite a bit. It's been thirty years and I've forgotten quite a bit but I have the equipment (boxes, frames, one ways, my old beekeeper hat, veil, and gloves, etc.) and have been toying with the idea of starting a hive but am wary of the legality issues. Perhaps I'll conveniently forget about these laws and....... Well, anyway, nice to find like minded people out there. :) Should be a fun-filled Spring!

interested in rooftop beekeeping
i have large planted terrace rooftop adjacent to central park
my super is knowledgeable in beekeeping and is interested in discussing with beekeepers on site. know anyone?
