Chevrolet Volt: A Win for the Home Team
By DAN NEIL
Wall Street Journal, October 29th, 2010

. . . And now we have this little bit of science fiction: a four-seat, five-door electric car that doesn't run out of electricity—well, unless it runs out of gasoline. The Volt is powered through the front wheels by a tourbillon of electric motors and a 1.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. Serenely running off electricity stored in its 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack (435 pounds), the Volt can travel 25 to 50 miles per charge (depending on weather, terrain and driving behavior) using the electric traction motor and generator, which does double-duty as traction motor. On a test drive here last week, my driving partner and I got about 49 miles in all-electric range, with three people in the car, but conditions were perfect and we were driving like funeral directors. The Folding Bike Goes Cool
Once the pocket protector of the cycling world, these adaptable rides have evolved into a stylish mode of transport

By MICHAEL HSU
GEAR OCTOBER 2, 2010 Wall Street Journal

. . . but foldingbikes are now mainstream (many of the major bike manufacturers offer at least one model). Some have co-opted the style of their more respected full-sized brethren. Others, like the classic Brompton, have become icons themselves.

With a dizzying number of foldingbikes to choose from, one size does not fit all. For our lineup, we eliminated the smallest (you know, anything a clown might ride). Their tiny wheels can make the bike's handling disconcertingly hyper-responsive (a slight turn of your handlebars will send you careening over
the curb). At the other end of the spectrum, we included bikes that may be too big to store in a studio apartment but break down easily for travel—perfect for a drive, or even a flight. (Read More)

wow - where to begin - I was arguing w/ the mrs about getting a car vs biking to the LIRR and then it snowed....took about 90min to dig out...shes looking at cars - so sad. the good news is she doesnt trust anyone selling them? Carpooling: craigslist rideshare doesnt seem to be used on Long Island - nyc is a bit better...I like the idea of pedestrian only streets, but nyc needs to really think about tunnels - they have them in boston and montreal - or even another elevated west side hwy. congestion pricing seemed like a great idea - not sure if this is still an option. long island would benefit from bike lanes but these people are insane drivers! might need a little extra education / enforcement. Planning is very important to have the major hubs near the LIRR - but unfortunately everything is spread out. Which reminds me - I need to try and telecommute once a week! my dad does this 3/5 days - he loves it.

Here are a couple of resources I've found useful for getting around the city:

A great tool for finding the safest bike route is Ride the City:

And Streetsblog is a great way to keep informed of all sorts of transportation, bicyclism and pedestrianism:

Audi’s Electric Car Gets Even Hotter
Audi’s Electric Car Gets Even Hotter
By Chuck Squatriglia January 11, 2010
from Wired

DETROIT — We didn’t think it possible, but Audi has made the e-tron electric car even sexier.

The German automaker unveiled the second iteration of its sweet electric concept here at the North American International Auto Show. It is sleeker, simpler and less powerful than the concept first seen at the Frankfurt auto show in September and then at the Los Angeles show last month. But it looks less like a concept designed to wow journalists and more like a production car designed to attract buyers. (Read More)

Street Corners vs. Cul de Sacs
New York Times Published: January 9, 2010
By DAMON DARLIN

Real estate agents often chant the mantra “location, location, location,” which essentially means “find a home in a well-kept neighborhood with good schools and a low crime rate.”

Some may cite a fourth factor, “walkability,” a concept supported by self-styled “new urbanists” who advocate denser cities designed for the pedestrian and mass transit as much as for the car. In their ideal neighborhood, you could walk to a bookstore and then to an ice cream shop, and your children could walk to school, probably unescorted. (It sounds like so many movie depictions of America in the 1950s.) (Read More)
