Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you about street tree care. I just wanted to let you know that two classes are coming up on the subject. The first, at BBG, doesn't offer a permit. But I was just assured by someone from the Parks Department that permits are rarely, if ever, checked.

Street Trees need our help! Two opportunities to learn more about Street Tree Care are coming up in April:

1. Street Tree Bed Gardening
with Susan Fields
Tuesday, April 7
6-8pm
No charge, but registration is required.
http://www.bbg.org/edu/adult/community.html
Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Street trees do much to improve our environment, but they often receive
little care. In this class, learn the benefits of street trees, how to
improve the health of a street tree by caring for its bed, get tips on
tree-bed gardening, and more in-depth information on street-tree care.
Bring your street-tree care questions and find out more about the city's
efforts to increase and protect the urban forest canopy.

2. Caring for Street Trees
Friday, April 24

5-7pm

Marcus Garvey Park

18 Mount Morris Park West, Manhattan

In this basic workshop, you'll learn to care for young street trees, receive free tools, and get a Parks Volunteer Permit, which will allow you to care for street trees and greenstreets. (Workshop does not cover pruning.)

Advance registration is required. To register, contact channaly.philipp@parks.nyc.gov or (212) 676-1929 with your name and email and/or phone number.

you don't need a permit as long as you're with someone who has a permit. but if you'd like one, it's free and the city gives you the tools you'll need to care for tree beds: trowel, weeder, cultivator, gloves, water bucket, and even a hose if you'd like. it's a great program. if you're interested, i'll let you know when we set up the class. the city also runs classes independently. I think they're posted on the parks department website.

that's great. we're just organizing things right now, but i'll let you know when the fun will begin!

we're putting together a volunteer permit class with the parks department. would you be interested in getting a volunteer permit (if you don't have one already)?
